#Unmissable Rome
The best restaurants in the Italian capital, from world-class pasta to top-tier maritozzo, incredible coffee, and the finest fine dining
I really should have started the #unmissable series with this, because all roads lead to the Italian capital. However, in Rome, finding truly authentic, fairly priced, and gastronomically exceptional places isn’t easy due to the sheer number of touristy spots. Mediocre places thrive too easily off the endless tourist crowds. There will always be enough Americans or visitors from Asia lured in by a well-advertised Aperol Spritz deal or a charming view.
If you’re new here, these are the previous installments of the #unmissable series. If you’re still not sure why you should subscribe, I’ve also explained in detail what this Substack is about.
There's no need to worry—I check the offerings several times a year, most recently in July, and of course, the best local foodies always report back if an important new player enters the market or if an old one declines. This way, I have up-to-date and decidedly non-touristy recommendations across all kinds of food categories. Of course, I can't rule out the possibility that some of these places will be discovered by others as well, and it's highly recommended to book in advance here, too, as unfortunately, the truly great spots almost never operate on a walk-in basis.
In the following, I will share my absolute favorite spots in Rome—extensively tested and carefully reviewed after thoroughly surveying the market. These are only accessible after subscription and signing up.
Juicy pastas (amatriciana and carbonara!), refreshing tiramisus, wonderful gelatos, insanely good pizzas, plus excellent coffees and dishes with an exceptionally great value-for-money ratio await in the follow-up. :)
