It’s time to share the best spots in my hometown, which is also where I live, especially since I get so many questions from around the world about where to go in Budapest. Where can one — whether a local or a tourist — get a culinary experience that’s truly local but can also proudly stand up to international standards? Which is the most exciting Hungarian fine dining restaurant? And where’s the best breakfast? Where should someone go if they’re craving modern but still Hungarian flavors? Is there a truly cozy restaurant out there? And where’s the best place to show off Hungary’s love of bread? Is there anywhere that has amazing goulash? There is!!!

A guide that skips macarons, Neapolitan pizzas, artisanal burgers, sushi, donuts, and pho soups—instead highlighting local gems: restaurants, bistros, breakfast spots that can only be imagined here, the places that make it worth traveling to Budapest.

In putting together this post, I relied not only on my own research and tastings but also on extensive feedback from international foodies. I get a lot of questions from them, so these spots are thoroughly tested to see what an American, Japanese, French, or Spanish tourist might think—who, of course, don’t always see things the way we Hungarians want to show them...
